A common term that is classified as being corrupt are gratuities. A gratuity is defined as ââ¬Å"any discount, gift or benefit one receives by virtue of their profession (Andrews).â⬠Multiple departments have considered accepting gratuities a violation of their codes. The Law Enforcement Officer Ethical Standards of Conduct, or officer requirements, for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement states in principle six that Police officers shall not compromise their integrity, nor that of their Department or profession, by accepting, giving or soliciting any gratuity which could be reasonably interpreted as capable of influencing their official acts or judgments, or by using their status as a police officer for personal, commercial, or political gain. (Florida Department of Law Enforcement, n.d.) A common reason departments are trying to make public servants not accept gratuities is because of the ââ¬Å"slippery slope argumentâ⬠. It is believed that once gratuities are accepted, even a small one, it will ââ¬Å"start an evitable slide toward serious corruption (Andrews).â⬠Some people ââ¬Å"believe that gratuities are dangerous because what might start without intent on the part of the officer may become a patterned expectation (Cohen 1986).â⬠However, their are others who believed that gratuities should be encouraged. Richard Kania (1998) argues that the people who are offering the gratuities genuinely want to thank them for their services.
